Press Release: Coalition 2030 Welcomes UN Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

Coalition 2030, an alliance of over 70 civil society organisations in Ireland, welcomes acknowledgement at UN level of the urgent need to address inequality, conflict, climate breakdown, and persistent poverty.

Coalition 2030 was responding to the adoption of the Political Declaration at the 2025 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, which was held in New York in July. This declaration reaffirms the international community’s commitment to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

However, the Coalition has expressed concern over the United States’ decision to disassociate from the declaration, stating that the ‘SDGs advance a program of soft global governance that is inconsistent with national sovereignty and adverse to the rights and interests of Americans.’

Coordinator of Coalition 2030 David Rossiter said: “This position reflects a broader, troubling trend of geopolitical regression, where some states are retreating from shared multilateral commitments and the foundational principles of Agenda 2030. At a time when the world is coming to the end of the 2030 deadline and off track on several goals, international cooperation and solidarity are more critical than ever. The SDGs represent a global consensus, grounded in human rights and the universal values of peace, justice, and sustainability. They are not aspirational ideals to be cherry-picked but essential commitments to ensure a livable planet for all.”

Tying in with this, Coalition 2030 held an event in Dublin recently, urging the Irish government to enact a bill that would lead to the creation of a Commissioner for Future Generations.

Chair of Coalition 2030 Sandra Corrigan said: “In this context, Ireland must continue to lead by example. Coalition 2030 commends Ireland’s active participation at the 2025 HLPF and reiterates our call for the Government to strengthen its domestic commitment to intergenerational justice by delivering the long-awaited Future Generations Bill 2023. Speaking at the HLPF, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Darragh O’Brien, reaffirmed Ireland’s support for sustainable development and multilateralism. Now is the time to translate those words into action at home. The Future Generations Bill offers a tangible mechanism to embed long-term thinking in policymaking, protect environmental and social interests beyond electoral cycles, and ensure accountability for SDG implementation.
