What kind of future are today’s decisions creating?
The choices we make today will shape the Ireland, and the Europe, that future generations inherit.
Decisions about our environment, economy, public services and communities can have consequences lasting for decades. Yet public decision-making is often driven by immediate pressures and short political cycles. How can we meet people’s needs today while protecting the well-being of those who will come after us?
Building on Coalition 2030’s A Call to Action for Future Generations, this event will explore how Ireland can put long-term thinking and fairness between generations at the heart of public policy.
At the centre of the discussion will be the proposal to establish an independent Future Generations Commissioner for Ireland. Such an office could help public bodies consider the long-term effects of their decisions, strengthen joined-up action across government and ensure that the interests of present and future generations are taken seriously.
Held during Ireland’s 2026 Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the event will also consider how an Irish approach could inform wider European practice and contribute to a competitive, secure and values-based Europe. Ireland’s Presidency runs from July to December 2026.
The date provides a particularly strong international connection: the event takes place two years to the day after world leaders adopted the UN Pact for the Future and Declaration on Future Generations on 22 September 2024.

11.00am — Setting the scene
The international and Irish context, the UN Pact for the Future and the case for action across generations. The programme will also seek to bring in the voices of children and school communities.
11.15am — Panel 1: Making long-term governance work
The benefits of a Future Generations Commissioner; lessons from Wales and other European approaches; the importance of a whole-of-society response; and progress towards an Irish model. Followed by audience questions.
12.00pm — Imagining the future
A short intergenerational reflection on the future we want to create and the responsibilities we hold today.
12.10pm — Panel 2: Whose voices must shape the future?
Perspectives from young people, marginalised communities, older people and European youth representatives.
Next steps — From discussion to action
A facilitated conversation to identify practical steps for building political and public support for a Future Generations Commissioner in Ireland.
Online participants will be able to follow the event and submit questions through a moderated live chat.
